History of Gardens
Gardens have been one of the most historic things that have been kept constant throughout time. In fact even the Egyptians have been said to have tomb paintings depicting decorative gardens and landscaping. It may be hard to believe that something that we as a people do today people did in generally the same way over 4,000 years ago.
Gardens have evolved from one group of people to the next and back again. The Persian people were one of the first to design elaborate gardens. Since their environment was so harsh they actually built an irrigation system that would bring water down from the high snow topped mountains. The Persian gardens were also characterized by being divided by quadrants and those splits were made by water. Even today some still use this type of irrigation method.
Egyptians also used gardens for various reasons. Not only did they use them as decorative and peaceful places but they also attached some gardens to temples. The gardens that were placed close to private homes and other places were generally used to grow vegetables to sustain the livelihood of the people.
Others such as the Greeks and Romans used gardens in various different ways. Theses cultures saw a garden as not only a means of growing food but as a means of peaceful meditation. A garden was a place to go and come to peace with one’s most inner thoughts.
The history of gardens and gardening goes back a very long way. The techniques have been slightly changed but have really generally stayed the same. Different styles have come about throughout the years and some have merged together to make new ones. Gardening is a pastime of people all around the world and throughout history as well, holding on to it and passing it on to generations to come will be important for us as well as the ancestors that have handed it down.
