Hydroponics
Hydroponics may seem like a space age idea but it has been around for a fairly long time. Those environments that are not ideal for growing plants in soil have used this method to grow plants such as vegetables to be able to sustain life.
Hydroponics is the method used to grow plants without the use of soil. Instead there are various mineral solution type products that are used to grow the plants. In addition to the mineral solutions some plants may be grown in materials such as coconut husks, gravel and even mineral wool. These things are not necessarily needed; the only thing that must be apparent while trying hydroponics is the mineral solutions.
There have been various different types of mineral solutions that were developed throughout the decades that this technique has been used. One of the main solutions was the static solution. This solution is one that is typically used with a mason jar or a container somewhat similar where the water basically stays still. The mineral solution is put into the water while the roots of the plants stay close enough to the top of the water to receive enough oxygen. Direct sunlight is kept away from these plants in order to prevent algae growth.
The continuous flow solution is one in which the mineral solution is continuously run over the roots of the plants. This culture is much more efficient when having to deal with a numerous amount of plant life. Deciding which of these one uses really depends on the type of crop as well as the situational climate controls as well.
Hydroponics has not been the best means for everyone. For those environments that do not yield good soil, hydroponics may be right for those areas. Space is the most outer limits in which it has been used to prove that growing life is sustainable when the right materials are used.
